What's in a name? Cliabh, Scull and Kishie

These are Scottish names for types of baskets. Some of my ancestors came from northern Scotland and from Orkney, which has an ancient basket making tradition. Even boats were made using basketry techniques. A cliabh is a general term for a basket, a scull refers to a framed basket (like the melon basket pictured) and a kishie is a crofters back pack basket you can see a great picture of a crofter crying peat here.

This wonderful website shows all of the different types and what they have been used for - Scottish Basketry.

To find out more about ancient basketry come along to a Shipwrights Cottage Basketry Workshop.
